Type of Lamps Suitable for This

Any lamp with a white or glass lampshade is very suitable. Some with a light coloured shade can also be used. These can be table lamps, floor (standard) lamps, ceiling lamps and outdoor lamps. Some bulbs are suitable for lamps with no shade at all. Of course the shade can also be changed, but if you intend changing the bulb, choose a white, glass, or light coloured shade.

Types of Bulb Available

Most lamps have fitted a pearl bulb, which is either GLS (normal shape), candle or round bulb. One option is just to replace this with a similar coloured bulb. Lighter colours, such as yellow or amber give more light, but sometimes blue, green or red give the desired effect. LED colour changing bulbs are also now available in some fittings, and these can give stunning effects, providing bright light is not needed. In fact many low energy bulbs (either LEDs or compact fluorescents) are available in different colours.

Another option is to fit Eglo special colour effect bulbs. These are bulbs having two coloured stripes - either vertical or horizontal - on the clear glass. The result on white shades can give the lamp a quite different appearance. Various colour combinations are available, but as far as I know, they are only available in screw fittings (E27 or ES and E14 or SES).

Flicker bulbs, which simulate candles, can be used in open fittings, which don’t have shades, but it should be remembered that they only give about 3 watts of light, so they are strictly for effect, rather than lighting a room.

Downlighters, fitted into ceilings, can also have coloured and colour changing bulbs fitted. These can either be LEDs or coloured halogens, and be low voltage or mains.

Whenever you are changing a bulb, remember to get the right fitting, and not exceed the recommended wattage of the shade or lamp manufacturer. In the case of low energy bulbs, this is the actual wattage used by the bulb, not the equivalent wattage in terms of light that it gives out. (This means that far higher light outputs can be used with compact fluorescents than a filament bulb would give, e.g. a lamp in which the recommended max. wattage is 60W could have say a 20W compact flourescent fitted, so that it gives the equivalent of 100W of light.)
